The Way Life Is Book Review

The Way Life Is
by Rick Johnson

Book Description
Being in love and full of anticipation of a great life does not shield young couples from unfair and unexpected challenges and trauma. This book is a true story about a couple that continued to put one foot in front of the other when they would rather have given up; it’s about love and faith and standing fast against adversity.

The Way Life Is takes readers into the home of a young couple trying to accommodate their own needs, desires and demons while coping with the special needs of their children: Sara, born with a rare and life threatening disability known as Prader-Willi Syndrome; Gina, who arrived needing open-heart surgery in order to survive; and Andrew, an active and exceptionally healthy little boy stuck in the middle.

My Opinion
Rick and Patty seem to have a great life together. They are so in love and everything in their lives seem to be going great. When they decide to move and start a family their lives change completely. When their first daughter, Sara, is born with Prader-Willi Syndrome they don't know how to handle it. Patty gets depressed and Rick refuses to admit there is anything wrong with his daughter. They decide to separate but then want to work things out and they have another baby, a son named Andrew. Since he was born normal and healthy they decide to have a third baby. Gina is born with a heart problem and needs open heart surgery. I was totally surprised by this book. I was surprised by how honest the author was about his feelings towards his daughters. I was also surprised about all the things this family had to go through. I can't say I know how they feel because I have not been through what they had to deal with. But I do have children and I'm pregnant with my third right now. I know all parents just want their children to be healthy. When I was pregnant with my second the doctor told me my son had "water in his head" and I had to get ultrasounds every three weeks. I knew I would still love him no matter what and thankfully it corrected itself when I was close to 8 months pregnant but it was so scary thinking he was going to be born with something wrong with his brain. He was born with a "lazy right arm" and didn't move it much but they told me to just keep an eye on it and help him work it out and massage it. Everything was fine in a few months and he hasn't had any other problem since then (he's almost 2!). I know this review is not about me or my children but I just wanted to make the point that even though my kids are fine just thinking anything is wrong with them no matter how small feels like it's the worst thing in the world and I felt so bad for the parent's in this story. It is a very good book. I recommend it to all parents!
